When it comes to dealing with lower back pain, everybody we see wants to know

“Why is This Happening to Me?”...
or,
“Why Am I Still Suffering With Back Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months (Maybe More)?

Lower Back Pain is definitely the number ONE issue people come to see us about. You may be worried and wondering, 'how can I tell if my back pain is serious' or 'whats the best way to treat back pain'? The majority of people we meet have been told to rest their back, take painkillers or been told something scary like they'll need surgery or to learn to live with the pain- who wants that??

Perhaps you've tried YouTube for exercises for low back pain or stretches for lower back pain. These exercises or stretches may provide some mild, temporary relief, but more often than not these or not specific to the actual problem you are having, nor do they address WHY your back is 'at you'.

Another common story is from people that have gotten an MRI for their back pain. These scans can show normal changes in the spine for almost everybody- pain or no pain. Yet, the person comes out with a report saying a variety of things such as;
Degenerative problems

  • Intervertebral disc degeneration which occurs when the usually rubbery discs wear down as a normal process of aging and lose their cushioning ability.

  • Spondylosis the general degeneration of the spine associated with normal wear and tear that occurs in the joints, discs, and bones of the spine as people get older.

  • Arthritis or other inflammatory disease  in the spine, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis as well as spondylitis, an inflammation of the vertebrae.

Trapped nerves and spinal cord problems;

  • Spinal nerve compression, inflammation and/or injury

  • Sciatica (also called radiculopathy), caused by something pressing on the sciatic nerve that travels through the buttocks and extends down the back of the leg. People with sciatica may feel shock-like or burning low back pain combined with pain through the buttocks and down one leg.

  • Spinal stenosis, the narrowing of the spinal column that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves

  • Spondylolisthesis, which happens when a vertebra of the lower spine slips out of place, pinching the nerves exiting the spinal column

  • Herniated or ruptured discs can occur when the intervertebral discs become compressed and bulge outward

  • Infections involving the vertebrae, a condition called osteomyelitis; the intervertebral discs, called discitis; or the sacroiliac joints connecting the lower spine to the pelvis, called sacroiliitis

  • Cauda equina syndrome occurs when a ruptured disc pushes into the spinal canal and presses on the bundle of lumbar and sacral nerve roots. Permanent neurological damage may result if this syndrome is left untreated.

  • Osteoporosis (a progressive decrease in bone density and strength that can lead to painful fractures of the vertebrae).

All scary sounding stuff! (NOTE: Cauda Equina is very serious, but usually very rare)

However, the vast majority of people can be helped! In clinic I find that the individuals back pain has nothing to do with the findings of the MRI scan and that in the vast majority of cases, once the individual follows the program and advice I give them I can get the person back in action. This involves time, individual specific treatment and home low back pain exercises. Individuals with a positive mindset and who are focused and dedicated usually do very well.

Reasons why your Back Pain is lasting longer than it should;

  • You've been told to 'rest' it

  • You've only been given painkillers or creams/rubs

  • You thought it would just go away

  • You've tried non-specific exercises from Google or YouTube

  • You've tried a few 'massages' or other non-specific treatments

  • You've had 'physio' before but you just didn't get the result you wanted
